You’re struggling.
You’ve tried to find help, but nothing seems to work.
You’ve searched for answers, but the resolution to your problems is always just out of reach.
You’ve worked extra hard, but it just leaves you frustrated and despairing, more broken than ever.
Where do you go from here?
Our Difference
Biblical counseling is different from everything else you’ve tried because our goal as biblical counselors is to point you to the Bible’s solutions.
The Bible’s solutions are different from everything else you’ve tried because:
- God is the one who works change (Philippians 2:13)
- Change comes from receiving a new heart that desires something different from what led you to your struggles (Ezekiel 36:26-27)
- Practically, this change is most visible in a renewed devotion to the church, where you experience teaching, fellowship, the sacraments, and prayer (Acts 2:42)
- Such transformation comes from the work of the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:18) as your mind is renewed in God’s word (Romans 12:1-2)
- All this is backed by God’s rich promises (Philippians 4:19), not the insights of a guru or the ability of a counselor or therapist
If God is the one working change in you, then you have real hope that is not based on your own efforts!
Our Approach
All of this is done the way God says; which is to say, it’s a ministry (Ephesians 4:12). Our ministry approach can be summarized in four words: Listen, love, learn, and live.
Listen. We listen and seek to understand your situation, the external trials you face and the internal struggles you deal with. So we often spend much of the first couple of sessions asking a lot of questions to try and get to know you and to see the situation with clarity.
Love. Our aim is to love you as a brother or sister in Christ, to care for you and help bear your burdens. We will pray regularly for you and study the Scriptures with your situation in mind so that we might provide biblical hope and encouragement to you.
Learn. A big part of a counselor’s job is to help you learn what the Scriptures say. Each session will include study and teaching of the Word, yet in a way that attempts to help you see how it applies to your life.
Live. We will provide guidance and accountability on how to live out what God says. At the end of every session we provide assignments that include spiritual disciplines (Bible study, memorization, reflection, prayer, etc) and practical exercises that will help you live out what we talked about.
God is the ultimate author and agent of change in your life. But at the same time, biblical counseling asks more of you than most other approaches.
You must be willing to:
- Deny yourself (Luke 9:23)
- Trust in Christ (John 14:6)
- Submit to God (James 4:7)
- Look at yourself honestly (1 John 1:8)
- Set your mind on the Lord (Isaiah 26:3)
- Read and study the Bible (Romans 15:4)
- Commit to a local church body (Colossians 3:16)
- Regularly meet with your counselor (Ephesians 4:11–13)
- Complete the homework your counselor assigns (James 1:22)
With this humble and hopeful willingness to grow, you can expect God to do great things during the counseling process!
What to Expect at a Biblical Counseling Session
Inquiry. The first sessions will involve a lot of questions. The goal is to get to know you in order to understand the issues that you struggle with. As the counseling relationship develops, your counselor’s questions will continue to explore your real-life responses and how you are living out what the Scriptures say.
Scripture. It should not come as a surprise that biblical counseling is rooted in the Bible. Each session will focus on one or more passages, so bring your Bible and be ready to engage with it.
Homework. Every session will include practical assignments to help you grow in your relationship with Christ as well as specific applications of what the Bible says about your situation. These assignments can include additional reading from books and articles, journaling, guided Bible studies, Scripture memorization, prayer, church involvement, and practical, hands-on exercises to introduce biblical change into your life.
With a humble heart, a desire to honor the Lord, and a willingness to apply what God says in your life, you can have great hope even in the darkest situations.
I look forward to getting to know you and serving you in this way!
