About

Confessional Counseling exists to help every Christian—pastor, counselor, leader, or layperson—to disciple and be discipled in the context of the local church body.

Our aim is to recover a Scripturally-regulated practice of soul care that flourishes within and is informed by the confessional faith and practice of the local church.

Broadly, as Christians we confess the Nicene Creed, and as biblical counselors we affirm the standards of doctrine and conduct as set forth by the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC). Generally speaking, those who hold to orthodox Christianity and appreciate the beliefs and emphases of ACBC will find value in our content.

Specifically, we hold to the 1689 London Baptist Confession. This confession was modelled after the Westminster Confession and the Savoy Declaration to highlight the doctrinal unity within the Reformed faith while articulating the distinctives held by Reformed Baptists.

Similarly, we wish to promote broad unity within the biblical counseling movement while encouraging practitioners to hold their local church’s specific confession or statement of faith as their standard for faith and practice.

Our Distinctives

We are convinced of the importance of these five things: The sufficiency of Scripture, the local church body, confessionalism, the responsibility of elders to equip and care for their flock, and the calling of every church member to personal ministry.

1. The Bible

Promoting a Word-regulated ministry of soul care.

A truly reformed church is a Word-regulated church, and biblical counseling is a ministry of the local church. Therefore, a faithful counseling ministry is a Word-regulated counseling ministry.

2. The Church

Rooted in the ministry of the local church.

Counseling that is expressly Scriptural must first and foremost be grounded within the local church, in harmony with its worship, under its discipline, and serving in conjunction with the teaching and preaching ministry of its biblically-qualified elders and teachers.

3. The Confession

Emphasizing the historic doctrines confessed by the local church.

Faithful biblical counseling or “soul care” ministry happens in the context of a church that unashamedly confesses the timeless truths of the Christian faith. Therefore, we aim to produce counseling resources informed by the great, confessionally-stated truths of the Christian faith and to encourage counselors to practice their ministry in similar contexts.

4. The Pastorate

Equipping pastors to shepherd the flock.

Pastors must minister the Word faithfully both in public and in private (Acts 20:20). Therefore, biblical counseling is fundamental to pastoral ministry. Our aim is to offer resources that would be beneficial to the whole body of Christ, but particularly helpful for pastors.

5. The Body

Helping each member of the church to minister biblically.

Every member of the body is called to do this work of ministry in some capacity (Ephesians 4:12). Therefore, biblical counseling must be richly integrated into the life of the church. To that end, our mission is to see individual church members grow in their ability to minister the word in the home, in the community, and in the fellowship of the saints.
